A BIT OF HISTORY

Waterloo opened in 1848 and grew so haphazardly that it became a music-hall joke. It was rebuilt in stages around the trains and finished in 1922. Its main entrance, the Victory Arch, is a memorial to the railway company’s staff killed in the First World War. It has more platforms than any other station in Britain, and from 1994 to 2007 it was where Eurostar left for Paris and Brussels.
