Victoria is really two stations, built side by side in the early 1860s by different railway companies, with a wall down the middle. They weren’t joined up until the 1920s. For over a century it was the gateway to the continent, with boat trains for the Channel ferries. Today it’s the gateway to Gatwick, Brighton and the Kent coast, at about the same speed.
