Carlisle Citadel opened in 1847, a neo-Tudor station by William Tite, and before the railways were grouped in 1923 it was shared by seven railway companies, each with its own booking office. It’s where the West Coast main line meets the Settle–Carlisle line, which British Rail tried to close in the 1980s until a long campaign won it a reprieve in 1989. These days it’s mostly where you find out whether the train from London is as late as the board said.
