New Street opened in 1854. In the 1960s it was rebuilt as a dark concrete box with a shopping centre on top, and in 2003 Country Life readers voted it one of Britain’s biggest eyesores. A rebuild finished in 2015 wrapped it in shiny stainless steel and added a big bright atrium. The platforms are still underneath, in the dark.
